YouTube is one of my favorite social networks. It’s a site where anyone can go to get an expert’s opinion. No matter what your favorite topic is, YouTube is sure to have hours of videos you’ll love to watch. But while so many of YouTube’s creators can rack up tens of thousands of subscribers and millions of views, many of them struggle with how best to monetize YouTube channels.
The discussion of how to convert internet fame into real dollars and cents is ongoing. Should you take money to endorse products from vendors? Should you try to get sponsors for a weekly show? It’s tough to figure out exactly what to do, but you should do something. Think about it like this: every day that that goes by before you monetize YouTube channels is a day where you’re throwing away money.
There’s one way to monetize YouTube channels that almost no one in the YouTube community seems to know about. It may also be the best way to monetize. It’s called dropshipping. It works and you can start doing it with very little investment.
What is Dropshipping?
Dropshipping is a kind of ecommerce (online selling) used by everyone from individual sellers to major retailers. Here’s what it looks like.
Manufacturers create items, but they don’t sell them. They have to find retailers to sell the products for them. The vast majority of items that are sold are not manufactured by the same company that does the selling. For example, Wal-Mart sells you a hat, but Wal-Mart didn’t make that hat.
The same applies to ecommerce. Many of the listings you see on marketplaces like Amazon and eBay are being sold by middlemen who pay wholesale prices to manufacturers for the right to sell their items.
Sometimes the seller buys products, stores them, sells them, and ships them. Other times, the manufacturer stores and ships the product while the seller only sells. When the manufacturer ships the item for the seller, that is called dropshipping. The seller is charged a lower wholesale price and keeps the profits.
It’s not a scam or a get rich quick scheme. It’s industry standard used by huge stores like Wal-Mart and Target. And you can use it too.
Why You Should Monetize YouTube Channels with Dropshipping
The main benefit of monetizing YouTube channels with dropshipping can be summed up in one word.
You could wait for sponsors to contact you. You could wait for advertisers to email you. And if they do, they decide what they pay you, how you’re paid, and what metrics are used to determine whether or not the partnership was a success. They can terminate the deal at any time. Often, these companies presume YouTubers are not business savvy and take advantage of the creators with unfair deals.
Dropshipping has the advantage of allowing you control over your own money-making enterprises. You control how much money you bring in, how much you want to weave the product placement into your content, and what metrics you’ll use to define success.
What Are Good Products to Dropship?
Check out the data below compiled by OpenSlate for the most popular topics on YouTube separated by gender.
Anything can be dropshipped. Manufacturers are always looking for new partners to help sell the products they create. If your YouTube audience is mainly women, consider selling makeup accessories, fitness equipment, or pet accessories. If your audience is primarily male, consider selling gaming accessories or sports equipment. Obviously, this isn’t exact. When you’re trying to monetize YouTube, you have to think about your audience first. What can you sell that your audience would actually want to buy?
How Do You Get Started Dropshipping?
Here’s a step-by-step guide to get started with dropshipping to monetize YouTube channels.
- Decide what to dropship. Remember: it needs to be related to your audience. Don’t try to sell office supplies on your YouTube channel about punk rock music. Sell guitar picks or leather jackets.
- Find a dropshipper. Spotify has a great guide on how to find, contact, and partner with legitimate dropshippers. Dropshipping isn’t a scam, but some dropshippers are. Don’t get taken advantage of.
- Decide how you will list your items. Many dropshippers use Amazon and eBay. Others also create their own websites through WordPress, Shopify, or BigCommerce.
- Download an inventory manager like ours here at ecomdash. Ecomdash automates tedious tasks in dropshipping. It will automatically take your orders from Amazon, eBay, Woocommerce, Shopify, and other tools and route them directly to your dropshipper for fulfillment, making the entire process totally hands-off.
- Add a link to your store in the description to your videos. Record a bumper for the beginning or end of your video that advocates for your product.
That’s it! With ecomdash, as soon as the sales are made, they’ll go straight to the dropshipper to be delivered to the customer. If you knew it was this easy to monetize YouTube audiences, you would’ve done it long ago.
So get out there and create. Make the videos you love, and make some money while you do it. Dropshipping has been a secret of the ecommerce industry for a long time and now creators on YouTube can start using it to take control of the financial potential that comes with having a successful YouTube channel. Good luck!
