Stamps.com recently announced that it was going to buy Endicia, a similar postage provider, for $215 million. Endicia is a wholly owned subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid based in Palo Alto, and – much like Stamps.com – a leading provider of “high volume shipping technologies and solutions” for those that ship via USPS and other postal partners.
According to Stamps.com CEO Ken McBride, “high volume shipping is the fastest growing segment within the mailing and shipping space.” The purchase of Endicia will merge Endicia’s advanced shipping technology with Stamps.com’s large scale SMB (small and mid-sized business) customer acquisition. To date, Stamps.com has focused on acquiring small business and enterprise mailing customers, whereas Endicia engages professional high volume shippers. Together, these providers will combine their best talents to reach a broader market and compete with other major mailing and shipping companies. Officials from Stamps.com predict this move will result in minimal customer overlap between Stamps.com and Endicia.
